about

The second and final album by Richmond, VA's the Technical Jed, 1996's The Oswald Cup is a bristly and noisy record that yet never quite strays into being "noisy" or "difficult." Sounding rather like Television's Tom Verlaine fronting Polvo, The Oswald Cup is more moody and mysterious than slashing and aggressive. Singing guitarists Daniel Bartels and Clancy Fraher spin murky and dark-hued waves of sound topped with liquid and melodic lead lines that regularly break out of the soundscapes just enough to keep the whole thing from skittering off into post-rock pretentiousness. Song titles like "When the Levis Break" help keep things grounded as well. The lyrics are mixed low enough to make them all but unintelligible at times, so that listeners have to hunt for meaning, should they want to. Yet even on a superficial listen, The Oswald Cup is an inviting album for fans of the progressive wing of '90s indie music. -Stewart Mason (Allmusic.com)

about

the Technical Jed Richmond, Virginia

Fraher taught Bartels some open tunings on his new telecaster, and Daniel began creating his own musical vocabulary that would later set this band apart from the typical 2-guitar bands of the day. ... more
